All you need to know about Ombre

You’ve heard the term and you’ve seen it around, but do you know how easy it is to get the look on your nails?

Ombré, or gradient nail art as it is also commonly known as, is a super easy way to transform an otherwise boring manicure into a “wow, how on earth did you do that” one. This is one of my favourite nail art techniques because I am all about mixing bright, fun colours when creating nail art. I mean, why have one colour when you can have them all? Or three at least.

There’s a fair bit of confusion around the terms and a lot of people argue they are very different. Technically ombré is the fading of a colour to a lighter/darker shade of that same colour (e.g light pink to dark pink) and gradient is the gradual fading of one colour to another (e.g yellow to green and then blue) But I don’t like to get too caught up in technicalities. I think both terms are suitable as I use the same technique to achieve both looks. so I’m not too fussed when people refer to these looks as either “ombre” or “gradient”.

So how do you achieve the look then? Lucky for you I recently created a video tutorial on my YouTube channel, showing you how it’s done. Check it out here:

Valentines Day Nail Art

It’s that time of year again. Time to pull out your pink and red polishes to get your cute Valentines nail art designs on! This year I am keeping it simple for Valentines Day because I currently have a lot of other nail projects on the go. But here are some of the designs I have done…

Pink ombre design with silver leopard print hearts:

Gradient hearts:

Love letter nail art:

You may recognise the love letter nails from a couple of years ago. I did these nails for Valentines Day in 2013 and was originally inspired by the lovely Jenna from Polish Pals ( Jenna had done a “floating hearts” manicure with a love letter feature nail. I then recreated this design last year for a collaboration with River Island as I was the winner of a Valentines Day nail art competition they were hosting. As part of this I created a step-by-step tutorial for their blog. You can check it out here:

As I now have a YouTube channel ( (YAY) I have once again recreated the design for a video tutorial:

So what will you be wearing on your nails this Valentines Day? And more importantly, what are you and your special someone getting up to?

Thanks for reading, chat to you again soon xx

Welcome back and hello 2015!

Hi there!

Wow. What a crazy few months it has been. For those who have been wondering why I’ve been totally MIA on the blog over the last year or so, I have been taking some time to re-evaluate The Nail Trail and the direction I want it to go in. While I am SO sorry for completely dropping off the radar, I have really needed this past year to focus on growing The Nail Trail’s social media accounts (click here to see how to connect with me). I can’t really say I regret doing this because The Nail Trail’s Instagram account absolutely exploded from about 10,000 follows to 100,000 just the other day!! I am still finding it hard to believe there are so many people out there following my Nail Trail, and I am so grateful for the ongoing support.

2014 was a great year. As all years, it had its ups and downs. As some of you may know, until recently I was living in Canberra for work. I loved what I was doing work-wise but I really struggled being away from my friends and family, and managing to keep up a long-distance relationship was really hard and emotionally draining. Luckily my work was able to give me an opportunity to work back in Melbourne, where I am now. I also spent a good few months working on my newest project – a YouTube channel! I had wanted to start up a YouTube nail art channel for ages but had been putting it in the “too hard” basket (for lack of a better excuse). I finally got up the courage, with some help from friends, to put myself out there and thank goodness I did. My channel now has eight videos (slow and steady…) and already has over 1000 followers…wow!

So ANYWAY. What I am trying to say here is that I am really ready to throw myself back into blogging this year. I love connecting with you guys via social media but there is something great about being able to write it all down in the form of a blog post. I hope that you will stick around to see which path The Nail Trail takes and to follow me on this journey.

So for now I will leave you with my 2014 highlights. If you want to see more of my highlights from last year, you can also watch my 2014 Year in Review video here:

This was very exciting for me because I had received a lot of requests to start creating nail art tutorial videos. I went out and invested in a new camera, tripod and MacBook (oh my goodness, how did I ever live without a mac before?!!) and started to play around. A few months later I uploaded my very first YouTube tutorial – Rainbow Leopard Print Nails! Check it out here:

Ohhhhh my goodness I could NOT believe this. I remember when I hit 1000 followers and how happy I was. I never thought it could grow so much –and so quickly! I have since hit over 100K. How amazing is that…!! My next goal is 1 million 😛

Last year I had the exciting opportunity to work with some new brands, including Sally Hansen, River Island, Fuse Gelnamel, Sensationail Australia and Look Good Feel Better.

Here are some photos from these collaborations:

Cambodia: holiday nail snaps

It’s been months since I got back from one of the best holidays ever in beautiful Cambodia. And I only just realised I haven’t yet shared it with you guys HOW RUDE of me 😛

For anyone who hasn’t had the chance to visit this incredible place I would highly recommend you put it on your bucket list ASAP.

We visited the capital Phnom Penh, travelled down to the beach in Sihanoukville for New Years, stayed in Tree Top Bungalows in Kep right near the national park, and then took an overnight (and very scary) bus trip to Siem Reap to visit the temples. All in all a wonderful holiday.

True to form, I also did some nail art while I was away that I wanted to share with you.

PicsArt_1388826936496[1] PicsArt_1389263599194[1]

I don’t quite know what to call the first one. To me it looks like watercolour paints, blending in together. I achieved this effect using makeup sponges to blend all the different colours together, similar technique to that of an ombré/gradient. The one on the right is a little hard to make out but it was a Prosecco inspired design. I did these bubbly nails while we were in Siem Reap. Quite simple actually, I did a pale yellow/blue gradient with white dots for the bubbles and used a fine nail art brush for the champagne glass.

Rainbow Skittle Reverse French

I did one of my fav ever nail art designs, reverse french skittle, for me and my friend Amara. The colours we used here are from the Chinaglaze Sunsational collection. If you’d like to try this design, check out my tutorial on how to get this look here.

Here is me and Amara again with our cute gradient palm tree nails and, of course, delicious Piña Coladas. These are probably one of my favourite nail designs summery and beachy!

New Year’s Nails

PicsArt_1388282897206[1] PicsArt_1388283079283[1]
We brought in the new year in Sihanoukville, down at the beach. Unfortunately my boyfriend Joel was sick on New Year’s Eve so we didn’t get to party much but our bodies probably thanked us for it the next day 😉

Which one of these designs is your favourite? Do you guys travel with nail polish/tools or is it just me? I had so much trouble trying to condense the polishes I packed but struggle to part with them all for long periods (Yes I’m crazy, I already know this…haha).

Until next time,

Hannah xx

Tutorial: Cute and simple love letter nail art!

In my previous post, I showed you one of my favourite Valentine’s Day nails from this year, love letter nails.

I was lucky enough to be the winner of River Island’s recent nail art competition for this design and as part of this, I have prepared a tutorial for you on how to create this look!

What you will need:

–       Base and Top Coat
–       White nail polish for the base
–       Pink or red nail polish for the heats
–       Black nail polish for the lines
–       A striper brush or a very fine brush
–       A small dotting tool
Step 1  – Add your base coat. It is very important to do this step as the base coat will protect your nails from damage and staining. A good nail treatment base coat will also help to strengthen your nails and promote growth. Here I used Grow Stronger  base coat by Essie.

Step 2 – Paint your  base white. Here I used Alpine Snow by OPI, as shown below.

PicsArt_1395283341570 PicsArt_1395282881221

Step 3 – Using a nail art striper brush, paint a thin black line from the bottom right corner of your nail to the centre of the nail (see below).

Step 4 – Repeat this step, painting a thin black line from the top right hand corner of your nail to meet the other line in the centre of the nail. This will create a triangle shape with these two lines.

PicsArt_1395282836917 PicsArt_1395282778485

Step 5 – Paint another thin black line, from just a little bit above the point of the triangle in the centre of the nail to the top left hand corner of the nail.

Step 6 – Repeat this step, painting another thin black line from just below the point of the triangle in the centre of the nail to the bottom left hand corner of the nail.

PicsArt_1395282737017 PicsArt_1395282671526

Step 7 – Using a very small dotting tool, dot two small spots just to the right of the corner of the triangle (see below).

Step 8 – Using your small brush, carefully join the two dots with a point to create a heart shape. You may need to clean up your design a bit once you have done this.

PicsArt_1395282980373 PicsArt_1395282067964

Step 9 – Finish it off with a top coat! Here I used RapiDry, a quick drying top coat  by OPI.

Step 10 – Repeat for each of your nails and voilà! You are done!
